Abstract

A number of inert matrices have been evaluated with a rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC) to provide a more defined culture medium for the cultivation of rumen protozoa in vitro. All of the inert matrices tested retained rumen protozoa longer than vessels run without a matrix (up to 7 d with matrix, less than 3 d with no matrix). A semi‐inert digested hay matrix retained protozoa for up to 13 d, as did fresh hay.
