Abstract

Using a range of interdisciplinary critiques this chapter explores ethical questions raised by increases in citizen participation across the galleries, libraries, archives, and museums sectors. Following Susan Standing and Craig Standing (2017), it introduces key knowledge, economic, and relational considerations that such institutions are only beginning to acknowledge and respond to. The chapter argues that museums and heritage sites must begin to participate more robustly in debates about ethics, positioning themselves at the heart of more dynamic and reflexive participatory practices.
