Abstract
It is commonly assumed that liberalism and the Enlightenment naturally go together, and therefore opposition to the former implies opposition to the latter. But this dominant view of their relationship is a simplification. There are a variety of liberalisms and enlightenments, and a range of possible relationships between them. There is no single, simple route from the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century to liberalism, and no one correct way to understand the relationship between them. While there are many liberals who embrace the Enlightenment and its legacy, and there is a long tradition of Counter-Enlightenment anti-liberalism, there are also Counter-Enlightenment liberals and pro-Enlightenment anti-liberals.
