Abstract

A PhD qualitative, comparative, case study (VOCAL) was undertaken with children and young people with cerebral palsy, Levels III-V of the Gross Motor Function Classification System. They were aged nine to sixteen years, with communication and learning disabilities. The aims were to explore their views, experiences and choices about participation in recreational activities, to explore the well-being impact from their level of participation. Participants took part in two interviews, kept a diary for twelve weeks which the parents added some photographs and an observation at one of their usual activities was carried out where photographs were taken. Seven case studies were completed. Data were analysed using Braun and Clark's six stages of thematic analysis. This led to the identification of three themes 1. Participation enhancers. 2. Champions for disabled children’s emotional well-being. 3. Hindrances to participation. The parents were the key advocates to promote participation in recreational activities. Some, but not all, professionals were also advocates who considered them in designs of environments and equipment that enhanced their choices such as skiing, surfing, bike riding. These all enhanced their emotional well-being. This has the potential to increase the fun and joy in the lives of disabled children and their parents.
