Abstract

It is well recognized that testing the electrical insulation performance of full-size HV power equipment is time consuming and very costly. Therefore, a reduced scale of a GIL/GIS system is being constructed with the objective to study the performance of spacers for future compact HVDC GIL/GIS subjected to higher electrical fields having different shapes. Accordingly, the spacers will be made of new advanced materials and will be housed in new SF6-free gas environment such as in the recently developed candidates C4-perfluoronitrile (PFN) and C5-perfluoroketone (PFK) gas mixtures. This paper presents the design and preliminary computation results of the electric field distribution, based on Multiphysics simulation, using an initial design proposal for a spacer model under DC voltage with and without temperature gradient. Different conductivity models of the spacer material (linear and non-linear properties) were investigated to explore the stationary DC field distribution which is controlled by the material electric conductivity. The results show clearly that the field distribution is not only dependent on the electric field strength, but it is also strongly modified by temperature of the spacer material. Tests verification of the obtained simulation results will be undertaken on the reduced scale GIL/GIS system and improvements will be made accordingly.
