Abstract

Few composers of the last century achieved the popularity during their lifetime enjoyed by Francis Poulenc in Britain, where he was celebrated as one of the leading composer-pianists of his day, and where his music was considered the epitome of the quintessentially French in terms of its charm, elegance and wit. Yet, this clichéd view of French music – particularly prevalent outside France – belies the more complex nature of Poulenc’s true musical persona. Through investigating the deeper dichotomies that characterise Poulenc’s music, this article explores his association with the BBC while considering the reasons for his continued popularity in the British Isles.
