Abstract
Advances in care delivery and medical technology have resulted in increased life expectancy for many children with long-term conditions. This chapter considers the challenges and issues surrounding the delivery of health promotion strategies by children's nurses. It begins by defining the concepts of health promotion and empowerment. The chapter then aims to apply fundamental theoretical approaches to a case study in order to illustrate aspects of promoting health and well-being in the context of long-term conditions. It explores strategies used by health care professionals, in particular children's nurses, in the empowerment of children, young people and families. Restrictive physical interventions (formerly referred to as restraint) and therapeutic holding, also referred to as clinical or supportive holding, of children for procedures or administration of medication is frequently discussed and occurs in a range of health care situations and settings.
