Abstract
John and Joséphine Bowes are best known today as the eccentric art collectors who purchased thousands of paintings, sculptures, ceramics and other objets d'art as part of a museum project that culminated in the Bowes Museum. Within the museum archives, however, is a vast collection of French literature that formed their personal library. This article highlights the significance of this book collection, exploring what they purchased, speculating as to their literary and aesthetic tastes and motivations, and shedding new light on John and Joséphine's social circles through those volumes that include personal dedications.
