Abstract
Abstract Autistic people are at increased risk of developing mental health difficulties. Interventions targeting coping styles and resilience may improve outcomes, but these concepts are not well understood in the autistic adult population. A systematic review was conducted to identify and evaluate existing research on coping and resilience in autistic adults. Narrative synthesis was used to consider findings in relation to methodological quality and measurement validity. Seven quantitative studies were included, and findings suggest a negative impact of maladaptive coping styles on resilience and psychological wellbeing. Results suggest a promising but underdeveloped evidence base currently limited by a lack of consistency in measurement and small, unrepresentative, cross-sectional samples. Interventions should target maladaptive coping styles, and future research should explore autism-specific strategies.
