Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of ecological brush and juá in removing dental biofilm from children assisted in a shelter in the Municipality of Caruaru- PE , Brazil . Method: Eighty children were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=20), being a control - G1 conventional toothbrush and toothpaste (EC+CD) and three experimental - G2 conventional toothbrush and juá (EC+J), G3 "ecological toothbrush " and toothpaste (EE+CD) and G4 "ecological brush" and juá (EE+J). The study comprised four stages, an initial assessment of the Biofilm Index and three assessments at 15, 30 and 45 day intervals. The children received the hygiene kits corresponding to the group to which they were destined, and after using the methods , new levels of dental biofilm were obtained.according to pre-established periods. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and F tests ( ANOVA ) were used for repeated measures and t-Student with equal or unequal variances. The level of significance used in the decision of the statistical tests was 5%. The statistical software used was SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 15. Results: In all groups, the biofilm index showed higher averages in the initial evaluation. Significant differences were evidenced in relation to the initial assessment (p less than 0.001) for all groups. There was a statistically significant difference between the control group and the other groups. Conclusion: Although the alternative methods are less effective than the conventional one, they also reduce the levels of dental biofilm , proving to be effective and low-cost alternatives .
