Abstract
When children or youth have a brain injury their ability to participate in recreational activities can change. This presentation will present data from non-verbal and non-ambulant children and youth with cerebral palsy, indicating their well-being from their intentional behaviours, interviews and diaries. Their views, experiences and choices describe adapted cycling, Frame running, surfing, skiing, musical based events and social activities that benefited their well-being. Based upon positioning theory, the children’s stories are portrayed through a kaleidoscope of well-being. This illustrates how their position of where they choose to place themselves, is key to their storylines. The children showed they could be their own advocate for well-being, supported by people who attuned into their needs, with adapted equipment, to facilitate the activities in different environments. Key finding suggests that changing places toilets are essential to maximise participation for the non-ambulant children. People who attuned to non-verbal children and promoted their participation were seen as advocates for well-being, as well as the children themselves. There is the potential for designers to develop more adaptations to activities to increase the choices children have.
