Abstract
This chapter addresses the issues of power and politics as they relate to leadership for health professionals. It outlines some definitions of power and politics and discusses what it means to exercise professional power as well as other types of power. The chapter considers the significance of a professional's capacity to influence, together with a number of types of influencing styles. Social experience suggests the involvement of people. The operative word in the last sentence is ‘professional’; that is, clinical leadership occurs in the context of professional practice. Within large organisations such as healthcare, many individuals may feel lacking in power and influence because they are not included in the decision-making process of wider policy and direction. Critical social theory is relevant to healthcare because it is centred on social justice and empowerment and the relationships among knowledge, ideology and power as core to learning and experience.
