Abstract
What enables scientists to successfully attract external funding? Research on third-party funding discusses the consequences of external funding on research contents and sheds light on the regulatory dimension of competition-based research funding. Individual learning, however, is rarely the object of investigation. Research on peer review, in contrast, focuses on learning processes in the scientific production and evaluation process. Yet, insights into how these learning effects work and accumulate over the life course of applicants remain scarce. This study addresses this desideratum. Based on semi-narrative interviews with successful applicants from political sciences and organic chemistry, belonging to different generations, the paper examines, first, how learning takes place. Second, it explains why some applicants hold on to the belief that their proposal will be funded. It demonstrates how scientists actively acquire knowledge that enables them to write successful proposals. Acquiring this knowledge is a lifelong learning process. A central finding of the study is that successful applicants learn, above all, to make sense of their rejections.
