Abstract

This article considers the serial publication of Thomas Hardy's 1874 novel, Far from the Madding Crowd, in the context of the national agricultural strike of 1874. Several passages are read against the conflict to show how this otherwise romantic historical work of contemporary literature can be seen to resonate with its historical moment.
