Abstract

This chapter introduces planning as a discipline with an international dimension and context and presents an initial overview of the drivers of its internationalisation. It outlines how, in an urbanising world, across a range of political arenas and policy agendas, international debates and development goals are increasingly focussing on urban issues, and this creates an exciting and challenging context for planning. It identifies some of the key themes and issues that the book covers and defines the key terminology it uses in relation to planning, the ‘international’, and, ways of talking about different countries, states, and parts of the world. It ends by outlining the objectives and structure of the book.
