Abstract

This chapter is a comprehensive overview of managing the patient post anaesthesia. It begins with transport to the post-anaesthetic care unit, along with patient handover and assessment. It goes on to describe neuromuscular junction blockade, and the intubated or ventilated patient in recovery. Caring for patients following spinal anaesthesia is explained, as is postoperative documentation. Caring for children and parents in the recovery room and special considerations are also explained. Specific circumstances in the management of postoperative events and complications are described, including but not limited to respiratory distress, nausea and vomiting, seating, shivering, delirium, and hypoglycaemia. The chapter concludes with discharge from the recovery room, discharge to the intensive therapy unit, overnight intensive recovery, and postoperative ward assessment.
