Abstract
Matrilins are a family of extracellular matrix proteins which amino acid sequences show a modular arrangement of von Willebrand factor type A (vWFA) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) domains, followed at the C-terminus by an a-helical coiled-coil oligomerization domain. Presently four genetically different matrilins and further variants resulting from alternative splicing are known. Due to its restricted tissue distribution, matrilin-1 was originally named cartilage matrix protein (or CMP), and it is the best characterized member of this protein family. Though the involvement of matrilins in diseases is not yet firmly established, elevated serum concentrations of matrilin-1 have been found in juvenile and rheumatoid arthritis as well as in relapsing polychondritis.
