Abstract

As record numbers of low carbon technologies (LCT) like electric vehicles and heat pumps are being introduced to the energy system, low voltage (LV) electrical power networks will be increasingly stressed. Suitable approaches to reinforce LV networks are however not fully established yet. To address this, the concept of D-Suite is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. D-Suite is a series of smart LV power electronic solutions with coordinated functions like voltage, power and harmonic compensation to optimise the use of existing network infrastructure and facilitate resilient power systems. One type of D-Suite devices, i.e., D-SOP, is taken as a case study in this paper. Optimised hardware design, control and protection methods of D-SOP are presented in detail. The effectiveness of the presented D-SOP was verified in MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS simulations.
