Abstract

This chapter reports the results of project designed to investigate the motivations for learning Welsh among adults. Staff from the Cardiff Q-Step Centre (School of Social Sciences) and the Language, Policy and Planning Research Unit (School of Welsh) worked with undergraduate and postgraduate students from the School of Welsh and School of Psychology in this collaborative and interdisciplinary research project. We designed a questionnaire which was completed online by 746 adult learners of Welsh in Wales and internationally. The data were analysed quantitatively in order to ascertain the main reasons for learning Welsh and the extent to which these reasons can be grouped in order to look at wider trends. Firstly, we outline the general trends in the data and focus on differences between different age groups of learners and those who live in Wales and those who are learning Welsh outside of Wales. We then show the results of a factor analysis undertaken to investigate the extent to which the different motivations can be grouped under different underlying themes.
