Abstract

Drawing on our immersive and multisensory ethnography of outdoor swimming in the UK, this chapter explores swimmers’ felt and embodied experiences of waves. Beginning at the edge where water meets land in the shallows, plunging through the force of breaking waves, and swimming beyond the break into deep and open water, the chapter shows how the movements of bodies are entwined with the movements of the sea. These encounters produce different sensory and emotional experiences, shape and strengthen friendships and communities, and entangle understandings of risk, joy, and well-being. Thinking and feeling with the movements of the sea, the chapter shows how waves shape our interactions, encounters, relationships, and connections, and how we learn from the sea and each other.
