Abstract
This systematic literature review examines port sustainability in Saudi Arabia (SA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), highlighting current efforts, significant gaps, and challenges in the region’s maritime industry. It identifies two key themes in sustainable practices: technological advancements and green initiatives. The main technologies adopted for sustainability include Industry 4.0, performance-indicating, automation and robotics, simulation, terminal operations, electric vehicles, and loading and unloading technologies. Sustainable initiatives in SA and UAE ports include integrating renewable energy alternatives, promoting sustainable development concepts, developing directives for sustainable port development, establishing governance frameworks, mitigating environmental impacts on marine life, and implementing ecological management tools. The review identifies that geographical and political factors still challenge the adoption of these technologies and initiatives. It discusses these challenges and proposes solutions, such as collaborative efforts among key stakeholders, including port authorities, shipping companies, and research institutions, to address them and promote sustainable practices in SA and UAE ports. The review also offers proposals on how to further enhance port sustainability within each identified practice.
