Abstract

This systematic literature review delves into port sustainability, highlighting significant gaps and challenges in the maritime industry's sustainable practices. The literature reveals a concentrated effort on automation, digitalisation, eco-friendly technology adoption, pollution control, energy management, and adherence to port-specific environmental regulations and compliance frameworks. However, the adoption of these practices varies globally, underscoring the importance of geographical context. Specifically, this study focuses on the Middle East, inspired by a 2022 World Bank Report that ranked the region's ports highly in sustainability according to the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI). Employing a systematic review of 25 articles under two main themes—technological advancements and green initiatives for sustainability—the study uncovers three primary concerns: the lack of standardised key performance indicators for port sustainability, operational challenges in implementing sustainable initiatives, and the impact of geographical and political factors on the adoption of sustainability practices. The study underscores the need for collaborative efforts among port authorities, shipping companies, government bodies, industry associations, and research institutions in promoting sustainable practices, considering that geographical and political factors are essential intervening variables. Keywords: sustainable ports, digital ports, intelligent ports, green ports, Middle East, Gulf ports, Saudi Arabia, UAE
