Abstract

This book chapter outlines early Christian involvement in Classical education, literature and philosophy from the first to the third centuries CE. It discusses in particular the teacher-student model as the guiding relationship-model at the root of early Christian teaching and living, early Christianity as a literary and educational prophetic movement, the work of the Shepherd of Hermas as a case of Christianity putting higher education at the service of the community, and the limits of Christianisation during the first three centuries CE and persistence of pagan classical culture.
