Abstract
This article sets out main strands of research on ancient consolation (and consolatory literature). It explains the relevant terminology (A.) and discusses first the non-Christian (B.) and then the Christian tradition (C.), before offering a conclusion (D.). The non-Christian section comprises Greek, Roman and Jewish literature, and a section on consolatory motifs. The Christian section is divided into New Testament (I.), 1 Thessalonians 4:13 and its reception (II.), the major works of the Patristic tradition (III.), and consolatory motifs in the Greek and Latin tradition (IV.). The conclusion includes some remarks on the reception of the ancient consolatory tradition down to the end of the 19th century.
