This paper reviews relevant literature to highlight the issues and challenges, and provide sound practice principles of school-based occupational therapy (OT). Defining the exact nature of school-based OT to ensure consistency and quality of delivery is a key issue. Collaborative working is strongly recommended, but challenges remain to make this effective. Practice principles of how to improve relationship building, communication, training of teachers, and presentation of OT programmes into schools is outlined. Strategic planning between Health and Education at a national and local level is essential to the wide-spread implementation of effective, efficient and evidence-based school-based OT practice.
