Abstract
This paper argues that Ernoul’s account of the events of 1187 wascomposed as a direct rebuttal of some of the stories the authorhad heard circulating among the Westerners who arrived in theEast on the Third Crusade. It is proposed that the text was largelyconceived as an apologia for Balian of Ibelin, particularlyregarding his political alliance with Raymond of Tripoli and hisrole as the chief negotiator in the surrender of Jerusalem to Saladin
