Abstract

This chapter addresses the role of street lighting technologies in making energy efficiency gains in smart cities. Real-life cases reported on street lighting covey varied systems that are currently in place or being experimented with across the world. Switching to more efficient lights and making street lighting ‘smart’ by integrating it with wireless infrastructure of sensors and controllers demonstrate considerable potential for reduced energy consumption and nighttime lighting pollution. More advanced systems include dynamic lighting controls that adjust lighting to ambient conditions; connected lighting systems that can work ‘on demand’ and/or in a coordinated way; as well as smart poles that become multifunctional observatories able to collect and exchange different types of information. The increasing presence of these street lighting technologies demonstrates how the digitalization of energy quickly transforms the very nature of seemingly ‘mundane’ urban services.
