Abstract

In this chapter, we outline some of the main features of contemporary digital activism focusing on civil society organisations and protest movements and their practices of techno-political participation in the hybrid digital ecosystem. Specifically, we address three key aspects of digital activism: the educommunicative dimension; media innovation; engagement and participation with civil society media. These features are developed within a theoretical framework sustained by the concepts of media ecologies and media practices. To illustrate each of these aspects, we draw on a series of global case studies in both the Global North and South, looking at the context of social movements and their encounters with independent/alternative media. In the concluding section, we outline the key takeaways and sketch future avenues of inquiry into civil society media and digital activism in both theoretical and practical terms.
