Abstract

Gas turbines are systems designed to provide large power outputs employing advanced thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, material science and combustion principles, amongst many other complex fields that are involved in the design and development of these units. Therefore, talking about gas turbines could cover an entire book on its own rights. However, this chapter solely attempts to elucidate the advantages of using gas turbines for power and propulsion generation whilst ensuring that ample emphasis on the combustion system of these units is properly addressed. Further, the chapter approaches the challenges of using ammonia as a fuelling vector, raising the potential of the molecule as a gas turbine fuel that can potentially support the transition to the decarbonisation of both the power and aerospace sectors. The chapter is divided into an introduction where the concept of gas turbines for power and propulsion is briefly explored. Following sections present some details of current combustion systems used in these units, whilst also bringing up the complexities of using ammonia in gas turbine combustors. Various technologies capable of supporting this potential application are discussed. The units employ state-of-the-art techniques that are under assessment worldwide. The chapter ends with details of several programmes that are currently ongoing to stabilise and mitigate unwanted emissions from gas turbines powered with ammonia. Conclusions around future trends are also presented as guidance for readers interested in pursuing this exciting field of ammonia to power.
