Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a major cause of cancer mortality in developed countries with an incidence ranking of third. Young-onset (under 50 years of age) colorectal cancer is now the subject of intense research as worryingly the incidence worldwide has increased by nearly 80% since 1990, with higher death rates. There have been significant advances in risk prediction, molecular characterization, bowel cancer screening, surgery (including surgery for liver metastases), radiotherapy, and systemic treatments, including novel biological targeted approaches, reflected in improvements in cure and survival rates. Many patients with advanced incurable disease now live for over 2 years and the options for multimodal treatment approaches are reflected in the complexity of treatment choices. The next era will further optimize personalized treatment with molecular and clinical biomarker-driven methods.
