Abstract

Some patients with colorectal cancer or gastrointestinal polyps have an underlying inherited predisposition to cancer. Identifying such patients allows appropriate risk management strategies to be offered to the affected individual and other at-risk family members. In this article, Mark Davies discusses the major features of the genetic syndromes associated with colorectal cancer and gastrointestinal polyps. Practical strategies are also offered to help identify which patients have an underlying genetic predisposition to cancer and should be referred for specialist cancer genetic assessment.
