Abstract
The work described herein is concerned with the synthesis and utilisation of bulky Lewis acids for catalysis in organic synthesis. Chapter One will provide a general introduction to Lewis acidity, frustrated Lewis pairs and Lewis superacidity, exploring a range of both boron and aluminium based Lewis acids. Chapter Two will cover the use of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane as a catalyst for the cyclopropenation of diazo compounds, as well as exploring the use of this catalyst for other cyclisation reactions. Chapter Three will explore Lewis superacidity through the attempted synthesis of a selection of bulky aluminium Lewis acids. Finally Chapter Four is an experimental summary of the research undertaken for this thesis.
