Abstract
This is a final report submitted in 2018 to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) following a 2015 RIBA Research Trust Fund Award. 'Practicing Engagement: The value of an Architect in a Community Asset Transfer' reflects on the role of the Architect in working with community groups who are taking on the management of assets in their local area, through a case study analysis of the researchers' role in supporting the development of the Grange Pavilion in Grangetown, Cardiff. We investigated value in three senses: the value an architect can add to a CAT, from considerations of the building in its physical and programmatic forms to its impact upon wider urban ambitions; the economic demands a CAT places upon the resources and skills of architectural practice; and the perceptions of the value of architects and architecture held by community representatives engaged in CAT processes. Our analysis of the time and resources required at the Grange Pavilion concludes for the need for appropriate recognition of what early and long term engagement demands of all involved.
