Abstract
Aim: To develop strategies for gathering comparable health data among persons with intellectual disabilities in Europe, the Pomona set of evidence-based health indicators was operationalized as a survey instrument, translated into languages and pilot-tested. This paper reports the findings of an initial survey applying this instrument. Method: During 2007, N = 1100 adults with intellectual disabilities in European countries were participants in a survey of demographic characteristics and aspects of their mental and physical health status, health determinants and use of health systems. Results: Results will be presented on the demographic factors – age, gender, living arrangements and level of ability – that are related to participants’ health outcomes and use of health care systems. Conclusion: Main findings and limitations will be discussed in light of current research evidence about health inequalities and implications for health practice policy.
