Abstract
Aim: Telecare refers to episodic, needs-based support from a peripatetic team which monitors activity in people’s homes via a technological ‘hub’ located within the house. A residential service provider in South Wales is implementing such a system of ‘targetted support’. Interim data on the impact of targeted support on residents’ quality of life are summarized. Method: A pre-post experimental control group comparison design was adopted. Objective quality of life consequences(social activity, constructive activity, and choice) were assessed on two occasions in two networks of small scale community-based residential services.Targetted support was implemented in only one of the two networks between the two data collection periods allowing a pre/post comparison within the experimental group, together with experimental/control group comparisons at both times. Results: There was a significant reduction in staffing levels in the experimental group which did not occur in the control group. There was an 11% reduction in opportunities for making choices and a 34% increase in the range of community activities in the experimental group. There was no significantimpact on the other resident outcomes. Conclusion: Cost savings appear to have been achieved through the introduction of telecare, without detriment to service users’ quality of life.
