Abstract
Acquired disorders of haemostasis are a varied group of disorders with often complex and overlapping aetiologies. This chapter will review the aetiology, investigation and management of these disorders. Sections include disseminated intravascular coagulation, coagulopathy of liver and renal disease, vitamin K deficiency and haemostatic dysfunction associated with trauma, pregnancy, cardiopulmonary bypass and massive blood loss. The causes of bruising and coagulopathy associated with vasculitis and arteriovenous malformation as well as paraproteinaemia and amyloidosis are reviewed. Finally acquired, immune-mediated inhibitors of coagulation are discussed concentrating on acquired haemophilia A and von Willebrand syndrome.
