Abstract

Dentistry is concerned with the diagnosis and management of oral diseases, the burden of which fall disproportionately on the most disadvantaged in society. The application of the principles of shared decision making to dental care is an emergent area which holds considerable promise for improved patient care. There are, however, important educational, evidential, and organizational barriers to its widespread implementation and adoption in this field. This chapter reflects on the progress of shared decision making in dentistry to date and includes a consideration of the types of decision that arise during dental care and the factors that influence patient involvement in clinical decision making and a patient’s perspectives on these matters. It also discusses the next steps in ensuring patients are equal partners in decisions about their oral care, from the perspectives of education and training, policy and practice, skill mix, and research.
