Abstract

China has prioritized Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) to support ageing in place. Gated communities, a primary housing type of HCBS, are where many urban Chinese older adults will spend their later years. This study examines home kitchens in gated communities and advocates for a collaborative design prototype for all participants in co-design to enhance older adults’ well-being. Design ideas were gathered from interviews with 100 Chinese architectural and interior designers specialising in residential spaces, leading to the development of Evaluation Indicators (EIs) and Design Knowledge by literature review. Building on EIs and Design Knowledge, a 3D interactive model allows designers, community committees, authorities, contractors, and older adults to interact in the kitchen co-design process, enabling intuitive feedback and iterative improvement of EIs and Design Knowledge. As the first phase in a series of studies, this prototype will undergo further validation in real-world co-design settings.
