Abstract

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have excellent redox properties that enable biomedical functionalities. Similarly, magnetic NPs are emerging as important materials in related areas such as magnetic resonance imaging. Reported here are procedures to synthesize cerium oxide–iron oxide hybrid nanoparticles (CINPs) through the high‐temperature thermal decomposition of metal oleate precursors. Varying both the temperature and relative precursor ratios avoided the formation of Fe3O4/CeO2 Janus‐like NPs, rather, the CINPs have a blended cerianite–magnetite structure. The potential for utilization of CINPs for various bio‐applications such as photodynamic therapy and magnetic resonance imaging applications are demonstrated.
