Abstract

Helen Nicholson’s many contributions to the history of the military orders include studies of their service to ruling dynasties, in particular the kings of England. Building on previous research into the military orders at the court of King John, this chapter explores their activities early in the reign of John’s son, Henry III, who came to the throne aged 9, in 1216, and whose majority was not fully established until the 1230s. Drawing on government records, the chapter considers whether the close links of John’s reign continued, examining the role of key figures within the orders, in particular the Templars, and the place of the New Temple in royal affairs.
