Abstract

The humidity chapter reintroduces the core concepts and implications of humidity in heritage buildings and collections. A grounding in the definitions and calculations of humidity, including absolute and relative humidity, precedes examples using psychrometric charts to estimate changes to environmental conditions to understand and mitigate damage. Discussions and examples of building infrastructure such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) are included, along with methods of mitigating uncontrolled environments, including conservation heating and showcases. Further topics are discussed in context, such as air exchange, monitoring, and measuring.
