Abstract
This is a translation, with accompanying clarificatory notes, of the fifteenth-century Sanskrit Samādhimaraṇotsāhadīpaka, “Illuminating the Power of Death in Meditation.” Composed by Bhaṭṭāraka Sakalakīrti of the Digambara Jain Mūlasaṅgha, the text provides, in 215 verses, a defense and celebration of sallekhanā, the Jain ritual of fasting to death. This translation is based on the version of the text edited by Darabārīlal Koṭhiyā and published in 1984 by the Vīra Sevā Mandira Trust in Vārāṇasī.
