Abstract

Taking as a field of research images published by two regional newspapers (La Voix du Nord and Kent Online), this work asks how, from one shore of the world to the other, Manche, exile was represented. The study of 374 press photographs reveals that these images all seem to fit into six paradoxes. Exiles seem invisible in press photographs, contributing to the creation of a "silent image". Same When they are visually represented, exiled individuals remain only depoliticized "heroes for a day" – or carry with them the heteronormative representations of a "maternal-infantile pathos". In other images, a "faceless mass" is visible that appears to be deprived of agency and unable to act in the face of the "surrounding danger". It contrasts, by its "imposed passivity", with the European actors present in these same clichés. Local press, even though they seem to be defined by norms of neutrality, familiarity and proximity, shape exile, through their visual representations, as an apolitical and decontextualized event. By relying on neocolonial biases and by making exiled people invisible, they cannot allow their readers to understand the realities of current migration dynamics in their entirety.
