Abstract
Far right parties are frequently defined as Eurosceptic; however, the reality of their engagement with Europe is more complex. While frequently opposing the European Union (EU), these parties claim allegiance to ‘Europe’ as a civilisational project. This chapter argues that far right parties have long conceived of Europe in terms of an identity. The argument is illustrated empirically through the analysis of the Italian Social Movement (MSI) and the Rassemblement National (RN). The analysis shows that since the 1970s, the two parties thought of Europe as a distinct civilisation and claimed to belong to that civilisation. However, it also shows that in the case of the RN, this understanding of Europe increasingly clashed with the project of European integration, leading the party to develop a ‘pro-Europe, anti-EU’ stance. The MSI/AN, on the other hand, did not adopt a similar position, remaining broadly collaborative in its stance towards EU integration.
