Franklin, Robert Arthur 2011. Why is Larry the Cat news? Churnalism, public relations and news. Presented at: Why is Larry the Cat News?, University of Newcastle, G21/22 Devonshire Building, 25th March 2011. |
Abstract
n this lecture Bob Franklin reprises the findings of the study conducted by the Journalism Studies Research Group at Cardiff University which informed the widely read book Flat Earth News by Guardian Journalist Nick Davies. He explores the implications of 'churnalism' and the growing influence of news agencies and public relations professionals in shaping journalists' editorial work, for 'quality' journalism, journalists' professional practice and more broadly for the role of the press informed citizenship in democratic societies. He concludes by the implications of digital media technologies for or constraining these trends.
