Abstract
The music of Peter Maxwell Davies (1934–2016) reveals a deep engagement with musical history and the past. Central to this engagement was his profound fascination with the life and music of the sixteenth-century English composer John Taverner. This paper traces Davies’s sustained dialogue with Taverner from his first encounters in the 1950s, through the two orchestral Taverner Fantasias and chamber Seven In Nomine of the 1960s, culminating in his monumental opera Taverner (completed in 1970). By examining these works, the paper argues that Taverner’s influence shaped a significant aspect of Davies’s compositional identity, providing both a historical mirror and a vehicle for modernist expression.
