Abstract

This article examines a group of recent Hong Kong migrants in the UK who are learning Welsh, exploring their language ideologies through the lens of minor transnationalism. It reveals how these migrants construct a parallel between Welsh and Cantonese, viewing both as languages that have undergone similar processes of minoritisation. Their decision to learn Welsh serves as a gesture of support for another marginalised linguistic community. However, their learning is also influenced by pragmatic considerations, including Welsh’s perceived lack of practical utility and their position as migrants navigating an English-dominant society. While they express enthusiasm for Welsh revitalisation, their learning efforts remain limited, reinforcing rather than challenging existing linguistic hierarchy. This study highlights how migrants’ relationship with a minority language in host country is influenced not only by personal and political identifications but also by structural constraints, offering new insights into the intersection of language ideologies, linguistic identity, and transnationalism.
