Abstract

The concept of Intellectual Property (IP) encompasses a diverse array of intangible assets and has evolved significantly alongside the progression of civilization, boasting a long history. Even today, the framework governing IP institutions varies considerably across countries and regions, presenting a complex landscape for firms—particularly new ventures with a global orientation—in formulating and implementing their IP strategies. With the advent of the digital economy, new types of IP emerge, adding complexity to the interactions between incumbents and new ventures. This chapter aims to elucidate the evolution and the current landscape of IP institutions and to address the overarching challenges firms face in securing global IP protection. It provides strategic insights for new ventures, emphasizing the importance of adapting to the multifaceted nature of IP management and strategy formulation within a global context.
