Abstract
A comparative account of Catholic and Protestant church laws reveals profound similarities between their basic elements. These similarities exist in relation to a wide range of ecclesial matters fundamental to the life of the church. These similarities have enabled both Catholics and Protestants to contribute imaginatively to the work of the ecumenical panel which issued its Statement of Principles of Christian Law in 2016. These principles reflect the laws of the Latin Church and the Protestant churches as they exist across the traditions in a multiplicity of legal instruments—from codes of canons through constitutions to books of church order. Whilst one legacy of the Reformation may indeed be institutional ecclesial separation, the idea of juridical ecumenism is a rich resource to identify what Catholics and Protestants share today.
