Abstract
When asymmetric warfare is waged on city streets, ordinary citizens may find themselves bearing witness to harrowing acts of terror. This chapter examines several instances where imagery generated by “amateurs on the scene,” typically using cell- or mobile telephones and shared across social media platforms, proved to be of vital importance for news organizations striving to cover an unfolding crisis. Beginning with the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York City, and proceeding up to the ongoing Civil War in Syria, this discussion centers for consideration a range of pressing issues concerning citizens’ impromptu, ad hoc photo-reportage of orchestrated violent conflict with a view to assessing the wider significance for visual journalism.
